Have you tried TK Maxx .. DW has got several full length evening gowns in there for formal nights that we would attend.

Try ebay. I've got some really nice stuff from there for bargain , it helps if you go to the high street shop and try on to see what size works for you and then search on dresses and formal category. Good luck!

I second the TKMaxx option. Saw a gorgeous red dress in there yesterday, pity I don't go to things like this or I'd have bought it

Try tkmaxx, and some charity shops, many have lovely evening dresses. Am slightly jealous as I really couldnt justify spending 75 each for the white tie do. Enjoy it.

Debenhams have lovely evening dresses. I bought a ballgown from there and used it as a wedding dress, cost approx £60.

worth trying debenhams for seeing what you like/what suits since they have the biggest range in belfast as far as I know. What about a wedding hire shop either?

I think there are some independent shops on the lisburn road in belfast too that do formal or semi formal wear, might be worth a drive along there.

Oh and I just thought, if you know an independent dressmaker and have some idea of what you want, it might be worth thinking about getting something made...
