And I think I may just go and crawl under the desk or something.

He can't find his P45 from when he left work in September 2015.

Well, at least I prodded him into starting work on it now rather than on 31st January ...

and we have a friendly contact doing finance at the employer's.

    I am cross though!

Good news: I have established that he has his final payslip, even if he can't find his P45. The settlement payment was tax free.

    He's just come back muttering.

In December, he got an email telling him he had a secure message waiting for him. He didn't log in immediately, and when he did (a few weeks later when I asked if he'd seen it?) he couldn't see any secure messages, so he phoned them. They couldn't tell him what the message said, or see it at their end. They thought it was probably a reminder that he needed to do 2014-15 by the end of January.

Well, now he's logged in he's found two messages, one from October saying he was due a tax refund from 2013-14 which they'd credit to him, and one from December reminding him to do return for 2014-15.

so I think there's still some confusion and he's got two accounts, so he really ought to get them merged, if he can. Or the one he doesn't need closed.

    Ho hum.

    I've watched him do this.

He logs in and enters data on his tax return.

He leaves that page and starts checking something.

He goes back to that page, and he's been logged out. There's a UTR and ***** for a saved password showing, but no 'login again with these details' button. Fair enough, can't be too careful.

There IS a link to click on in that situation: I'm not sure if it says 'log on' or 'next', but either way, following the links he gets to a 'this page does not exist' with a 'next' button, and that 'next' button takes him to a .gov.uk page which has lets him do ... nothing. Absolutely nothing.

So he types in the URL he needs to login again. And before he can do anything else, he has to logout, and enter a completely different UTR to the one which was showing when he was logged out.

    No wonder he's confused ...

And we're done! And we have the email saying we're done!! And he's due c. £250 back in tax!

It also looks as if he might make a bit more profit from his self-employment next year: maybe even enough for him to have to pay tax on it!

    Thanks for all your help.
