Holidays 2016 - Yes or No

  • I think it really depends on your level of debt and whether booking a holiday would mean you get in more debt. We have debt, it is very manageable for us and so we have for the last few years had 2 holidays per year. Normally a week somewhere in the UK and 2 weeks abroad somewhere. We save for this and so do not get in any further debt for these holidays and we still manage to make regular overpayments on our loan/mortgage. For us this works, yes we could get rid of our debts sooner, but we also work hard and so want to enjoy some of the money we earn too.

How old are your kids, Autumn?

If they are young they'll enjoy a sun £9.50 holiday as much as going abroad.

If going abroad is a must:

Having booked a holiday through the teletext website before they are sending emails all the time about last minute deals, there was one last month that was £162pp for an all inclusive holiday.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

My kids are 1 & 2 - so hence why £1500 AI holiday to holiday villages are abit lavish as I know it sounds bad but they dont fully appreciate it or remember it. We have done 2 £9.50 holidays to haven parks - we only go to local ones so as not to far to travel! I think next year 1 week in Scotland (self catering) and maybe end of the season haven park for a week.. depending on our situation. I was planning on going to Sweden (£1000 for two weeks) however I want to pay off my debt asap. In 5-10 years time we are going to need a bigger house (as little monsters grow) so Im wanting to save for that aswell.

At least you can take advantage of travel outside of school holidays at the moment - there are some incredible deals around to go abroad!
  • If we are short of money, or paying off a debt, we tend not to go on holiday. Lots of my friends book a holiday abroad when they haven't even paid off last years holiday! We have a Staycation whereby we take time off and plan days out. Really great way to unwind and so much cheaper.

No holiday this year due to health problems, but have booked a gorgeous holiday let in Lyme Regis for next year. I love traditional British seaside holidays more than going abroad!

I would try and pay the debt off first, yes the kids love holiday's but they will remember the memories of the things you do, not the money you spend :)
    Debt free once - Back again | Current debt: £2479.50 - January 2025 | Make £2025 in 2025 #11 - £41/£2025
  • Decided just to go away in May to Scotland for a week - places Iv found are around £450 for the week. Depending on the situation we may go away in Sept aswell on another cheapy. Go abroad hopefully 2017 - by that time most of our debt will be gone :-)
