1 year gap need vocational course help

Hi there need advice for my Brother,
Basically he has completed a level 3 extended diploma in sport with M,M,D and now he has a year to complete something that will increase his chances at applying for a degree in physiotherapy.
He is 18 on the 31st August so he is to young for an access course but I've found an HNC in sport sciences but the problem is this will need loan based funding because it is a degree level course.
He can't go straight to university now because of restrictions as he is an unaccompanied minor in foster care. This is an asylum seeker restriction of some sort.
What do people recommend? Obviously physiotherapy is a very popular course so I want him to have the best chance. Cheers.

Is he not able to get a job? It's great that you're supporting him, but what does he want to do for the next year?0

That may be so now, but surely won't be come September when he'll be an adult. Is there any reason why he can't apply through Clearing (assuming there are any Physiotherapy places available of course)?0 -

I'm not sure what you mean? We are not supporting him the money comes from the foster care team and that will end when he turns 18 at the end of this month and frankly good riddance because the team were largely a useless disgrace imo.
He is already working two jobs while his friends who are also coming out of foster care work under the table and claim council houses and every benefit going.
None of his jobs will help him as they are not related to physiotherapy. That may be so now, but surely won't be come September when he'll be an adult. Is there any reason why he can't apply through Clearing (assuming there are any Physiotherapy places available of course)?
Hi as I said in the OP there is some kind of restrictions on the university he can go too because of his immigration status, he will have free access when he turns 19 for some reason.
Also he doesn't have his c grades in gcse maths and english.
My advice to him is to spend the year getting his gcses and doing as much physio work experience as he can, weekly if possible. Then do the access course when he turns 19.
Unfortunately this would mean an extra year.0 -

I meant supporting him with his future plans.
Why not look at work experience, getting involved with local sports clubs for instance, or working with elderly people? He can do this alongside his paid employment. He needs more than just academics to get onto a physio course, especially when he'll be competing against candidates with more traditional qualifications.0 -

Well as your OP doesn't mention the words "immigration status" I would have had to be psychic to know that, and as I'm not I didn't. As you seem unwilling to tell us what's really going on I'm out.0 -

Not psychic just needed a bit of googling for terms you clearly didn't understand before you rushed in but I could definitely have been clearer and will edit my OP. Thanks.
What is going on is exactly as i've written with the addition of making the immigration issue clearer, which imo is not relevant as I clearly said he is restricted from university and that is all it influences.
Please don't make out this is some kind of rocket science or cryptic puzzle it is very simple. Essentially we are looking for the best 1 year college course or apprentice etc. to improve his chances of going to university for physiotherapy.
I hope that's clearer.
Thanks all for your help everyone.0 -

Fabulous. Your are not financially supporting your BROTHER, but leaving him as an "unaccompanied" minor in the care of the British state - and then you are complaining about the system. Perhaps you and your brother should have chosen another country to claim asylum in then? Do you have any idea what the cost to the taxpayer is of foster care places?
Your manners stink, you expect people to understand things that you do not explain, and decide what is or is not relevant to tell without any consideration for people trying to HELP you.0 -
From other posts I don't think it is his brother - he lives with his parents so there would be something very wrong if it was. OP can you clarify, and perhaps be a little more gracious to those that have tried to offer help?
Also, his immigration status would not stop him going to university this year, but he would not be able to take advantage of the loans and grants available to home citizens if he did so.0 -

Dear Daily Mail,
Apologies for not replying sooner, Tomtontom is correct that he is my foster brother which is explained earlier in the thread.
My "brother" now has TWO jobs and point blank refuses to apply for or go on any kind of benefits. Today he will be working a night shift at TKmaxx till 5AM then coming home and going out again in the morning at 10AM to deliver pizzas all day.
I'd say his attitude is a damn sight better then the average British teenager but no doubt you are just disgusted that his taking jobs away from us british folk.
Perhaps he should have 'chosen' another country to claim asylum and made a positive contribution elsewhere but then that would mean bigots like yourself would win.
I'd like to wish you a great holiday period but no doubt the idea of not having something to whine, be miserable and fuel your foreignPhobia fills you with dread. After all we all need something to stave off the boredom.
Regardless dear Daily Mail i would like to wish you a Merry Christmas as fruitless as it may be.
Btw I have THREE foster brothers all claiming or have claimed Asylum! I bet that thought makes you itch all over and shudder. :rotfl:0 -
I suggest that your brother gets in contact with the universities he is most interested in applying to and learns about their entry requirements, and how they are adapted for people with non-standard backgrounds. A summary is here, and the first to mention the BTec (Bournemouth) requires a biology A level B grade in addition. (At least I assume they wouldn't like a PE Alevel and sport BTec as too much duplication.)

Does he not have his maths GCSE because he doesn't have the maths skills, or simply because he wasn't in this educational system to sit the exam? As you say, it is a competitive subject. Can he get a relevant job? First aid training and volunteering with St Johns Ambulance would probably be useful too.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
