had an online delivery from the Waitrose last Sunday and most of my weekly shop (and all the fresh meat) had the expiry date until Wednesday.

4 pack Yeo yogurts - expiry date 17th Aug
Greek side salad - expiry date 17th Aug...
cherry wine tomatoes - 18 Aug
chicken kievs - 18 Aug
Veg &hallumi salad - 18 Aug
cherry vine tomatoes - 18 Aug
beef braising stakes (2 packs) - 19 Aug
Angus minced beef - 19 Aug
Organic whole chicken - 19 Aug
French saucisson - 20 Aug
Perfectly ripe gold kiwis - 20 Aug

the only items meant to last at least a week were 2 milks, a pack of olives, italian pasta, couscous, houmous and basil pesto sauce..

Phoned them of course, they refunded the yogurts straight away and said the rest is 'within their policy'. common sense is am not going to cook all the fresh meat in 2-3 days :(
am extremely frustrated!!! perhaps, you'd say dont order from them anymore, but i kind of love their food? online delivery is convenient for me cos we have a baby and live at a top floor flat.
i know other supermarkets tend to deliver the food with 'a short shelf life' as well, so it seems to be common practice and i stopped ordering veg online for this reason..
any advice regarding this?

Dates sound about right for the fruit and veg, that is what I would expect if I was shopping in store. Of course fruit and veg is usually fine after the date, check it and use common sense.

For meat that does seem short, but not exceptionally, I have shopping in store (Tesco & Asda) and found 4 days on dates and had to be careful. I think Sundays are often particularly bad as the last delivery might have been Friday. Just freeze the mince and that should leave you a bit more sorted.

Unfortunately I think you were unlucky, but I would explain to them that if one of the packs of meat had an extra few days (like Thurs or Fri) you would be OK, could they as goodwill refund one of them so you can replace it later in the week.

I think it sound about right, I have just had a Waitrose order delivered with lots of 3 for £10 meat and all of them are dated 21st which is fine. 3 days date is about right in my opinion.

Just about to Vac Pack it all and pop in the freezer for the next month :D

Seems ok to me. Salad doesn't keep very long anyway, the tomatoes won't know its the 18th, they keep longer, and the meat can be frozen.

They always seem to pack things close to the date as someone needs to buy it. If sth is very close to the date the Tesco driver usually mentions it and would take it back if I want him to. Those dates are just a guide anyway. For most things a freezer solves it, and your senses are fine to judge things like fruit and veg, even milk.

  • thanks everyone particularly, jon81uk! thats what i told them this morning, i'd like my meat expiry dates to be more spread out over the week, so its ok if some expired 2 days after delivery like in my case, but at least some could be used till Friday.. i also asked whats the best day to order an online delivery, and they said Sunday&Monday are the worst as they dont have any deliveries in..
so will be ordering for another day next time!
