    Not much help here, but every spring I buy one of those potted basil plants for little more than a quid in the supermarket and re-plant it into a large flowerpot.

    It flourishes and I have loads of basil for emergency pesto whenever I'm stuck for a quick meal.

    I also take cuttings and re-pot them to give to friends. It just keeps giving all summer.
