Turkey hols

Hi all

After some advice on a couple of things. We're going on a family hol to Dalman, Turkey in Oct. Just read that we need a visa as British natinals which can be bought at airport or via something called an e-visa via interent for about £20 each. Is that right?

Also, we will only be on half-board so any advice on how much money we might need to cover other meals (nothing ostentatious, just a normal lunch meal for 2 adults & 3 children) & other possible costs like transport, odd activities, etc.

Thanks in advance

The Turkish visa system is really simple. I got one a few weeks ago. Just follow the instructions on this link and print the visa and payment receipt off, then keep them with your passport when you enter the country. Saves time and hassle at the airport.

  • As mentioned, online visa application is really easy, just a case of entering a few basic details, paying then printing them off, you can do it when you arrive but you risk a queue and an unnecessary and pointless delay. Can't help you with the money I'm afraid, we're in Turkey at the moment but All Inclusive and in this area of Belek there isn't much outside the hotel complexes, if it helps, it's around 4 Turkish Lira to the £, however they seem to prefer USD or Euro for some reason, ATM machines will certainly give you the choice between lira or Euros but not sure about USD.

You don't need €uros or US$ anywhere in any resort in Turkey.

Change a few quid into Turkish Lira before you leave UK. Once in Turkey, If you're dealing in cash then just take £sterling, and change it to Turkish Lira as and when at any money-changers (Dovis).

People who believe they'll get better vfm paying for stuff in €uros or US$ are wrong. And in any case you'll always get any change in Turkish Lira.

Make sure when changing money to count it and then count it again before leaving the counter.

I never said you did need USD or Euro, I was merely pointing out an observation, in the shops I've been in, when you ask a price on something, the fist thing they say is "you pay Dollar or Euro" I of course have plenty of Turkish Lira but I also needed to draw some Euros out from a cash machine as some things in the hotel I'm in can only be paid for in Euros, as I'm here now, I know first hand.

It's because it's in the traders favour, simple as that. Pay in TL, or say that you'll go to another shop! They'll soon change their mind!!

They're telling porkies! The currency for Turkey is Turkish Lira. If they say they'll only accept €uros, then I'd take my custom elsewhere.

It depends which resort you go to. The ones with high numbers of German and Russian visitors accept euros more readily than the resorts that cater for mainly British tourists.

I went to Hisaronu/Olu Deniz earlier this year and everything was priced in £ or TL, no euros or dollars anywhere.

The visas are $20 each (from that website) which works out about £13, depending on the exchange rate you get from your bank.

Yep, they'll ALL accept €uros, and reap the benefit by offering an inferior rate of exchange on the goods they're selling.

It's against Turkish law [I think] for any retail outlets to refuse Turkish Lira. So unless you've already got €uros that you want to get rid of, what is the point changing £sterling into €uros [incurring a charge], and then accepting another charge from the shops who give an inferior rate of exchange on what you're buying?

I have to agree with PompeyPete that it sounds very strange that a hotel in Turkey is refusing to accept payment in its own currency.
What are the things that they are insisting on payment in euros?

I completely agree with Pete. Just get a few TL in case you need to buy drinks or something when you arrive and then change sterling as you go along. Most shops will change money commission free and they're open all hours. Banks and PTT (Post Office) have a slightly better rate but charge commission so it works out much the same.

Don't use an ATM unless you have a card that doesn't have charges and similarly don't use a credit card unless it's one of a few that don't charge. That's not specific to Turkey though just general travel advice.

Do you mean you're flying to Dalaman or going to Dalyan? Dalyan is a resort but Dalaman has little there but the airport. I was in Turkey a month ago and food is good value. It depends what sort of lunch you want but if you eat local meze that should be fine for lunch. I'd recommend looking out for where the locals eat like office workers in their lunchbreaks. Most meze dishes (in the upmarket resort I went to) were about £1.50 so it depends how greedy you want to be. DH and I tend to get 3 or 4 and share them. Or you could have pide (Turkish equivalent of pizza) which is good with some salad. Gin and tonic was about £3.
