With most products you pay less if you buy 'multipacks' e.g. 6 cans of coke, mars bars multipack etc.
I always applied this logic to fruit and veg, but have only recently realised this is not the case (doh.)

Afraid old news, was on some documentary a while back but not everyone might have seen it.0

Yeah DCFC79, might be old news but I never knew until I spotted it this week, and I am someone who is trying to cut shopping costs all the time.
I've told others (who have been shopping for decades,) and they never knew either.
It really suits me to buy one onion at a time, so they never go off.
Cheers

I always check prices per kilo, however, when buying pre packaged fruit and veg, in fact when buying anything pre packed, I still weigh the packs and choose the heaviest. You would be surprised how much heavier some packs are than others. Even chickens vary.0

Known for years its cheaper to buy loose, you just need to check the price p kg.0 -
I had a look around today, some of the loose stuff was significantly cheaper, others weren't.

Worth looking at the sizes of the produce in relation to how you actually will use it too. Most days I will have an apple in my breakfast, but I don't want a huge one and halved apples don't keep as well. So in this case, the prepackaged bags work out better value, but only if I do a little rummaging to find a bag with a greater number of smaller fruit.
The best bargain I've had so far while doing this was a wrongly labelled YS bag of organic apples down to about 30% of original price - they were still well in date, but the rest of the box had only one day left on their sell by dates.***Mortgage Free Oct 2018 - Debt Free again (after detour) June 2022***

I agree it old news, just searching finds similar comments at least back to 2008, but it's surprising how many people have never seen any info about it. The sceptic in me does ask why they thought the fruit & veg were being pre packed though. If the reply is 'to make it easier for the customer' then they really don't know supermarkets that well.:D
If you are a penny pincher though, it's well worth checking out some of the pre packed produce. Our local Asda has kindly installed electronic scales for customers to weigh and label their own stuff. It's also great for comparing prices.
Example: yesterday I wanted some Bramley apples. Sold loose at £1.47 per KG, pre packed £1.25 (800g nominal, £1.56 per KG), but finding 4 apples to weigh 800g can't be easy. I checked the bag I picked up - just over 950g, which, bought loose, would have cost £1.40. In this case I saved by buying pre packed, and unusually, the fruit looked to be better quality than the loose stuff.0 -
Asda have funny prices on loose & prepacked
from where i am sitting they have loose bell peppers for 67p each or 3pk for 99p"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0
