Multifocal contact lenses anyone?

Does anyone use them/tired them? have you used them successfully ? What brand do you use?

Yes I love mine. I use Clarivue daily disposables but you need to be guided by your optometrist as to the brand as the fit is important for all contact lenses, and not all brands can cope with all prescriptions.

I changed from gas permeable contact lenses to daily multi focal contact lenses quite recently.

I used my gas permeable contact lenses with reading glasses on top and for many years was happy with this.

I then found that I needed reading glasses and then a different pair of reading glasses for the computer (mid distance)

So off I went to the optician to change to soft daily lenses so that I could have laser treatment (only need to remove these 24 hrs before op whereas 3 weeks with the hard contact lenses - couldn't manage that!)

My optician suggested that I tried multi focal daily lenses before I tried the laser treatment.

I tried three different prescriptions. The optician was very patient!

He explained that it would all end up being a bit of a compromise as it is sometimes difficult to get a good long distance and a good near distance together in some cases.

I ended up by compromising and got good long distance and fairly good reading distance. I can manage well for smallish print but prefer to wear reading glasses on top of lenses for computer work. So, mine was a matter of compromise and doing best for my situation.

An glad I went this route (saved thousands) and find my daily lenses much more comfortable than my gas permeable lens - no getting dust stuck under them and no evening irritability.

I wore varifocal glasses and early this year tried contacts. I was also with Boots and they were great as I tried several types without success. They did say that some people just can't adapt to them. Then they went down the monivision route, one lens in my left eye to correct for distance, one in my right for reading. For me that was amazing - suddenly just fell into place and I have now been wearing these, daily disposable, for over 3 months and loving them

If you need a toric correction and multifocals it is generally a harder prospect.

their are only 2 lenses avilable with cooperivison being the far easier one to source.

The other manafacturer is Marc Envoy but will be expensive and Boots may not be able to source so may have to speak to indepent

Isn't there a toric multifocal coming out from sauflon soon? I know they merged with cooper but I'm sure the rep mentioned those recently.

Anyway back on topic. If you have good vision in both eyes (no lazy eyes) and don't mind an adaption period I would probably fit you with a mono vision correction, you'd have your distance prescription in one eye and a near one in the other - sounds mad but I've had loads of success with this as the toric multifocals on the market aren't good for everyone

I didn't even need any period to adapt...having tried a number of pairs of multifocal, as soon as I went the monvision route it was a 'wow' moment as I was fine with them almost instantly. Have found out since that 3 of my friends all went through the same thing and are happily seeing life through our monovision lenses :)

Thanks for the feedback peeps especially the optoms..

Well i have been running with monovision for about a year now and am currently 1 diopter down in my reading eye. This seemed tolerable and workable for a long while but lately i am beginning to become intolerant of the difference.

Do both eyes have astigmatism? I've had some success using full distance correction in the dominant eye and using a multifocal in the other, kind of mono-multifocal mash up.

Hi..without trying to dig out my script, both eyes are astigmatic. One is about 0.75d and the other a shade over 1d if i recall.

When i wear daily sphericals, the vision is very acceptable but i need to slip some readers on.

My script without mono is around -8.50/-7.50 but currently on mono im -8.50/-6.50

I use daysoft sphericals as they are non Si hydrogels, thinner, less complicated, cheaper.

I have used spherical acuvue dailies in the past also and occasionally now.

I am beginning to think i should just revert to full distance correction and readers again or just wear my specs more as they of course have the astig correction.

Last time i tried multifocal/astig contacts at boots i could feel them in my eyes and they really irritated. After a few hours i had them out but could still feel them days later ! I think they were coopervision from memory.

I think my PD is also toward the higher end of "normal".

I may go see my optom for another appt/chat..
