Interesting news snippet this morning where it mentioned that the government want 20% of students to gain work or study experience abroad.

The BBC news interviewee was a girl who had done a 3 month internship in China.

Perhaps graduates will become our biggest export?

I bet the 1.85 million unemployed think the figure is low, what about adding the under employed to the figure and those who chose to be unemployed, the torus crow about the record numbers in work hardly a surprise as the population grows is it
like all figures from all govts its smoke and mirrors and yet more smoke

Interesting that the numbers of employees and hours worked are both rising all the time that unemployment falls.

The Torus (Tories?) must have a lot of statisticians on side.

We all know a small but significant percentage of the unemployement claimants are completely unemployable. You wouldn't trust them to hold a turd.

I wouldn't put it quite like that myself ;), but I certainly take your point.

Unfortunately a significant number of young people in the UK today lack pretty basic numerical & communication skills and the ability to focus on tasks, as well as reading & writing. I would include many graduates in this as well. In my experience, I've found that young people from overseas are often better at speaking English & social interaction than those in the UK and it is therefore no surprise that more and more are being employed from other EU countries.

well it wouldn't be bad to re-enforce the message of the EU especially! Pretty everybody I work with in other EU countries do jobs in English. So wherever they are, from France to Romania, conference calls, always in English...makes you wonder why they don't go now :D

Says otherwise and are included in JSA figures.

Not sure why it is a fiddle. If you want paid to do nothing, please go and do it somewhere else.

I subscribed to the Spotted facebook feed of our local town. Like most of the Spotted feeds, its mostly active with a particular segment of a pretty blue collar grouping, so maybe not that representative.

However, one of their main bugbears is Poles stealing their jobs. Especially when someone finds out about a job advertised in Polish on a Polish job site.

Having grown up in the area and done my share of summer jobs around being a student, I know what those kind of jobs are like and how they were done when they only had local people to recruit from in the 90s.

If Eastern Europe hadn't come along I suspect half those companies would be out of business by now due to all the stealing, skiving, sickie taking, benefit cheating, chip on shoulder, British "workers" I had the pleasure of calling one time colleagues.

The employment agency said that all the light industry employers went into mourning in September when all the student workers left and they were stuck with what was left until May the following year.

There's also the issue that people who won't move 30 minutes away from their mum are trying to compete with people who are happy to relocate across Europe for their job proving more attractive to employers.

In addition, I would imagine that the stereotypical eastern European single young male migrant wouldn't hang about in Britain to be unemployed. If he couldn't find work he'd be off to Germany or wherever the work is.

The great difference between EU migrants and those from other parts of the world is that migrating from the EU needn't be a one-way trip. The great thing about the EU job market, if the rest of the EU gets their economies sorted that is (ex-Germany) that you can go anywhere and get work: if your local area is in a downturn then a large part of the world is your bivalve mollusc.

Mobility for work was one of the most common reasons cited by people attending Work Program interviews as to why they struggle for work.

Perhaps we need to proactively support young people from Newcastle and other struggling regions in their attempts to find their early work contracts in London and South East or other job hotspot. Subsidised short term travel and accommodation are probably banned terms in this part of the board, but I still think the wider benefits to changing someones work outlook would be worth it.

If I'm employing someone/some people to work on my house I don't want those who might mess up and then disappear off to some far flung place.

I personally will pay a little more for local people with a solid track record. It sounds like those sort of people are thin on the ground in the likes of London though.
