Temporary Divorce to Transfer Pension Assets to my wife?

  • well the Op did make a valid point about whether it's right to salary sacrifice down to £50k to avoid losing child allowance...

and if that outrages you, then step down to what most people consider reasonable which is the concept of salary sacrifice at all..after all, that deprives the country of 12% of your salary...

and what about duty free goods? should we all offer to donate the difference to charity when we travel....

see where I'm going with this?..

Well we all have our interpretation of right and wrong, I accept that there are no absolutes but my point was somewhat bigger.

I like to apply the children test (or in my case the grandchildren test). Will I feel comfortable explaining and promoting what I do to my grandchildren?

Now, 'kids we are going on holiday and the Government lets you buy goods cheaper at the Duty Free so that is what I am going to do, I suggest you consider doing the same' gives me no problem at all.

On the other hand 'Grandma and I are going to get a divorce and pretend not to love each other for a while in order to get the Government to give us a few extra quid in tax allowances, I suggest you consider doing the same when you think about getting married' gives me a lot of problems.

See where I'm going with this?..

What if he dies partway thru the divorce/settlement? She would get no pension?

Jonathan Aitken got divorced on terms spectacularly favourable to his wife, then went bankrupt and avoided paying the legal fees incurred by the perjury trial that sent him to jail.

See the calibre of people that have ideas like this?

Yes, people who have a faulty moral compass.

    I see your point.

Don't worry, if/when his wife gets wind of this she'll whoop his 4ss from here to the middle of next year .....

She might even marry someone else and share the pension with the new hubby. OP would then be up the swannee !

You can't see anything wrong in getting divorced as a tax fiddle.

    Jesus wept.

My understanding was that marriage and religion were now completely separate?

I hope al those who advocate doing everything possible to pay their taxes don't make use of an ISA, after all, given that the interest rates on ISAs are generally lower than on instant access savings accounts it would be hard to argue that one choose an ISA rather than a savings account for any reason other than to avoid tax....
    I think....

Whereas I don't drink and don't see why you should get cheap alcohol and ciggies just cos you are destroying the environment and harming the economy by flying somewhere.

Where as afaik getting a divorce doesn't require pretending not to love someone.
    I think....
