Perfume-how long will it last?

I have a bottle of Chanel No5 which is still in its sealed cellophane, boxed state. Ive kept it in the bathroom cupboard the last year.
How long will it last before its scent no longer resembles what it's meant to be?
Thanks :)

perfume needs to be kept in a cool dark place.

No direct sunlight and never left on a dressing table.

I would say the bathroom is not a good place as it gets hot and steamy place.

If you keep perfume too long it will go off. I am not sure how long is too long as I wear it and don't keep it for special occasions.

I wear it daily too, but my partner made an error and I got two for my birthday :) If I move it to a cooler place how long will it last? Any ideas? I dont want to open it to see if it's ok ;)

    Bathroom = bad for perfume.

Dark cool place and kept in box.

Perfume kept properly will last for years, the top notes might fade over time but the heart and base will be okay.

I bought a vintage bottle of Caron Fleurs de Rocaille extract(pure perfume), which was from around 1960. Its still glorious!:T

Oh by the way, wear it and enjoy do not just keep for best.

If you don't open it then you will never know and if you leave it to open it 6-12 months time you are still going to have gone off perfume.

Open it and try it. If ok then alternative between the two open bottles.

It also really varies per perfume. Some of the high street shop-bought stuff goes bad within the specified 12 months or maybe 24, but I've had some perfume from less well known French perfume houses which I've had for years and it's still just as I bought it.

I store my perfume (as well as my nail varnish) in the fridge as I find it lasts longer.

Definitely move it out of the bathroom. It's really not good to store perfume or make up in there. The moisture and heat fluctuations don't make for good storage conditions.

I too have had high street perfumes go off and others I've had for 20+ years. I was going to say the opposite to Calley but for the same reason. I was going to say don't open it until you use the other and throw it then if it's off. But I also like Calley's idea.

My Mum has had a bottle of Chanel No 5, opened, in her bedside drawer for at least 20 years! She hardly ever wears, and instead sticks to Next Perfume for every day use, it but when she does it still smells wonderful.

Some perfumes actually improve with age! They deepen, the scents mellow and combine, and sort of settle into one another. That said, most high-street perfumes are blended to be worn immediately and made to a price.

If you want to try something new/different you can try visiting Arabian Oud on Oxford St (or they have a terrible uk website) - some of those age beautifully :-)
  • Hello everyone,
It is divided in two categories internal and external.
    Internal Factor
Before answering the question you need to understand what form of perfume it is I.e Eau de cologne, Eau de toilette, Eau de Parfum, Perfume Extract,
For example Perfume Extract are the perfumes with highest concentration level, hence it is long lasting of all the scent categories.

    External factor

    *Room temperature
    *No direct sunlight
    *keep in dark room
