Polish to go on strike.

The Polish workers in the UK are being urged to strike in order to show their affects on the UK economy.

I say 'Go ahead and strike, you will find that in your absence, we have replaced you with a Bulgarian/Latvian/Romanian/Hungarian (delete as applicable).'

It's not as if we'd replace them with a Brit, is it ;)

They don't get it. While some are doing "important/valuable" jobs, the majority will be doing jobs that, if they weren't around, would be done by somebody else - and somebody else could live in the house they're occupying.

Same for anybody moving to a new area....

They've just been hoodwinked by somebody with an agenda.

So why aren't the 'somebody' else doing those jobs?

I find the initiative odd and also interesting, immigrants seem to always cop it for everything going wrong.

striking is pretty pathetic anyway, but doing it without the backing of a union is a bit silly, they will probably find they have no job to go back to anyway

I don't know. That would be job/area specific. In some areas/jobs it's because they see their trip to the UK as a "young person's 5 year plan to live in shared houses and save all their money and go home to buy a house for cash" -v- a British person's need to build a life/future ... so they'd come over as "keener" and more reliable when taken on in jobs with no future.

Some companies DO have specific language agendas in their recruitment - e.g. where jobs aren't even advertised in the UK, but are advertised in other countries, with the 'agency' then bringing the people here and finding them housing/transport to get to/from the jobs.

Others might be trained in stuff that isn't available to Brits to be trained in as workers here didn't have access to the courses, nor the money to go on them.

Each job will have a different reason why the non-local is doing it.

It's always the last 6 people that jumped on the boat right before it tipped over and everybody drowned that are blamed. Not those who queued quietly for an hour, in line and boarded/sat down sedately.

And surprisingly, it often starts with the locals why they're not employed in those jobs...

A lot of countries have similar problems. In Italy almost half of the pizza makers are not Italians, there're plenty of Italians looking for jobs, though they don't want to work for that little money.

Should pizza makers earn as much as a doctor and who would buy the pizza at those prices? Lucky there're immigrants filling that gap!

I was chatting to someone on holiday about the food factory where he was a production manager.

Outside of management many of the workers were from the usual places including Poland.

When the next phase of plant automation goes in, roughly half of these people will be surplus to requirement.

I'm pretty sure striking would only emphasise how problematic it can be to rely on human workers!

Does Italy have a minimum wage?

Indeed! I see that fairly often... not just automation but also with more and more role being to be performed offshore.

It may be hard to swallow but it's a new dynamic of work now, more people, more competition, more automation, more connected world.

Just wait when the developing world has caught up in 20/30 years.

Maybe I can make pizzas :rotfl:
