    She is a sales administrator, she earns 26k per annum. I know the wage is good but they are treating her pathetically, no wage is worth that. She obviously could have these commitments but it shouldn't really come to that. I want her to finish on time everyday not once or twice a week otherwise they're still taking the mickey.

    Given the companies apparent willingness to walk all over everyone, if staff are leaving and they're desperate, they may try to pull the cancelling of annual leave stunt. Just something for her to be ready for, just in case.

    What does she want? she may well want to do unpaid overtime and be part of the team doing weekends. Its up to her to do something if she wants to.

    As I said earlier burnout, it's completely taking over her life, it's not what she wants, they've taken the mickey too far with yesterday/today's 20hour stint. She's back at work now too.

    Is that 20 hours of work or 20 hours of being away from home? I wasn't too sure from your opening post.


    I don't want to sound harsh but her employer is not responsible for how long it takes her to get to and from work.


    If she didn't sign an opt-out from the (averaged) 48-hour working week and is working over-time, they should be keeping records of the hours she is working (whether or not these are "paid" hours).


    In any case they should be allowing appropriate breaks between shifts - those breaks from the end of the work shift to the start of the next one.

    She was at work roughly from 8:10 - 4:05 I'd guess, it takes her around 10mins to and from work so around 20hours at work roughly with 20mins travel time in total either side. As far as I'm aware you should have 11 hours rest between work not included travel time. This has not happened 4x now.

    What does she do after 8pm? It sounds all very weird. Are they forcing her to stay? Surely it is up to her to go at whatever time is acceptable beyond her contracted hours unless there is an issue of safety?

    What can of admin can you have to do that makes it an absolute requirement to be there for 20 hours until the middle of the night?

    I am starting to wonder. I wouldn't be able to stay awake until 4am never mind do any sort of productive work.

    I do 3 days of 11-12 hour shifts to squash all my full time hours up but start burning out around 5pm and need to save my 'easy' jobs for later on. There's no way I could stay awake for a 20 hour shift I didn't want to be on, and also find it hard to believe there is any management around/awake to stop her from leaving.

    are you sure she is at work during these hours?

    Short of coding roles and say corporate finance deals/company is being taken over, no normal office job does these sort of hours.

    Unfortunately I am sure she is. Due to this new system they've been installing it's messed things up with their stock take which has had this knock on effect. This is the major cause of these obscene working hours, however previous to this new system, because they clearly don't employ enough staff for the workload, all of the people on her department work late. As for her not getting up and leaving, I think this is due to the fact some of the other colleagues seem to be more tolerant. I found out that her colleagues actually stayed until 5am and because my partner walked out at 4am, they were funny with her yesterday. She just feels powerless to do anything unfortunately.
