I guess we just have to incorporate the use of fruits of natural sweeteners such as honey in their diet.
  • I've been trying to cut out sugar as well and I found some really helpful ideas on Pinterest. One of my favourites at the moment is Yoghurt covered Strawberries and popping them into the freezer for an hour or so. Delicious!! :)
  • If you chop up banana and freeze it, then blitz it up it makes a really nice creamy banana ice cream
    No more goo hoarding!

Most children not used to lots of very sweet or processed food really like crudite. Fresh vegetables in grab size pieces, at an appropriate time to eat.

Cut a banana in half, stick a wooden lolly stick into the cut end and freeze it and you get a nice frozen lolly. They go a bit brown after a few months but are fine, if a little weird looking, for a good few weeks. Grapes on skewers (or for a safer alternative, use cakepop sticks instead) and frozen are also a hit with my kids and they're used to 'normal' lollies too.

Honey is just sugar. There is nothing any 'healthier' about it. Anything sweetened with honey will have the same bad effects as something sweetened with a spoon or two of sugar. Including tooth decay.

Fruit is generally OK unless it's quite acidic in itself. The sugar is generally bound up within the cell structure of the plant - and is not available for mouth bacteria to digest and cause harm to the teeth.

However - if you whizz fruit up in a juicer - then that pulverizes the cell structure, and the sugar is released - meaning that it can cause harm to teeth.

Plus - other things are often added into smoothies like ice cream or honey or sweetened yoghurt - which makes them very sugary when all the sources are added up.

But dentally speaking - it's not the amount of sugar consumed, but the frequency of consumption. More than 3-5 sugar attacks per day, and dental consequences will be seen.

If your daughter in law is so strict I would ask for a list, you could accidentally give her something they're not allowed. In your shoes I would need a list.
I remember an Aunty furious with my Grandmother because my cousin had been given banned foods. My Grandmother was distraught as she was trying very hard. I still remember the scene over 40 years ago, honestly I remember thinking well it's not poison, he's not going to die and I'm so glad it wasn't me who gave him it
