I may be a bit late to this, however I thought I would post some info.

Unpaid internships are generally ILLEGAL. If the intern is merely shadowing to gain experience and not doing any work, or if the intern is a volunteer for an NGO/Charity, law doesn't require them to be paid.

If a business is employing an intern who is actively working for you and adding value to the business, they legally have to be paid the Minimum wage. Full stop. Do not be lured into a false sense of security by job boards and certain recruiters that advertise other unpaid internships. The company could be subject to employment tribunals (>£4k in fines), HMRC Investigations (due to unpaid NI or PAYE), and criminal proceedings (£5k in directors’ fines).

If anyone has taken an unpaid internship, you should be eligible to claim back the wages that you should have been paid by the employer.

Hopefully I haven’t put anyone off hiring interns. Most are extremely hard working and very hungry to learn and develop, and are always a great colleague to have around!

If anyone has any questions feel free to message me.
