Move my mother in law

My mother in law is 82. She owns her house, but needs to sell to move into sheltered accommodation. In an ideal world we would move her in to the new flat before selling her house. There is a lot of equity on the house. We have tried to raise the money ourself, but it is a non starter. Any suggestions?

Probably impractical to buy first then sell so I cannot see you have any other option than to put the house up for sale. Does your Mother in law live near you so you or your OH can deal with viewings etc to make the process as easy as possible for her?

We did it for my mum when she downsized from a large four bed house to a two bed retirement flat. She was a bit younger than your MIL though so was at least able to deal with viewings. You could always ask the estate agent to accompany all viewers.

House buying and selling is stressful at the best of times but unless you want to negotiate a bridging loan and that is a massive gamble which I would not do I cannot see any alternative than trying to do the both together.

Unfortunately she lives 5 hours away. I was hoping to make the move as stress free as possible. The estate agent is being very helpful, so I suspect we will have to do it the conventional way

How about a new flat where they buy the old one off you when you move in.

Try asking some of the charities for advice I cannot believe this a unique problem that has not come up before.
