Enforcing Change to Contract of Employment

Following a promotion and pay rise the company have asked me to sign a new contract (my old contract is nearly 18 years old)

If I don't sign, I don't get the promotion or pay rise

They also want to increase my contracted weekly hours from 37.5 to 40 (I habitually work more than 40 but it feels wrong to sign it away

As a long time employee I am way out of touch with modern HR - is this relatively common, or unusual - what options do I have or should I be considering

If they've already given you the promotion and pay rise then they can't take those away if you don't sign a new contract.

Evidence of this might be if they have already paid you at the higher rate or you've already started carrying out duties of the promoted role.

However if they haven't already given you the promotion and rise, then they are entitled to offer the promotion and pay rise conditional on you agreeing to an amended contract.

To be clear - they have not yet currently given it to me, it is conditional on signing

Is this going to sour the relationship? Is remaining put going to be an issue if you decline?
