change jar question

Hi there
I was just wondering when you have a load of change in 2p and 1p what do you do with it
it will be embarrassing to pay for stuff in 2s and 1s.:o
can you get it changed to real money at a bank or post office or do you have to pay it into your account
thanks for any help

  • Ask at your bank for some money bags then you can bag it up and take it down. I'm lucky in my bank has a cash sorter machine so I just take it down chuck it in there and it gets counted for me then credited to my bank account. And yes I've taken change down in bags and been given notes for it!

I think the supermarket machines charge. I save mine in a piggy bank and then get money bags and pay them into my account.

    Every little helps!

the coinstar machines charge about 7p per £. We mostly use them as we're too lazy and impatient to take them to the bank! lol!

We use the coinstar machines too some banks are funny about how much change you can pay in so double check before you set out if you do the bank option!
  • I know that they have them change machines in asda and i think in sainsbury's but like someone mentioned they do charge you. I suppose it depends on if you have lots of coins and the time to count and seperate them out whether you need to use one of these machines.

Oh bother, didn't know they charged. :o
To expand on what rayday2 said, Nationwide only take the five bags of change per day so it's defo worth checking with your bank.

Halifax are limited too not sure what the limit is but I remember seeing signs.

The children do mine which makes cheap entertainment for them, we only do it for holidays so once every two years or if they do a currency change you know the kind of coin sizes.

Thanks to everyone for your help
In the end I went down with it all in cash bags (sent DD down first to save me 2 trips!) and was told I had to pay it into my accout then I could withdraw it after an hour? wierd policy but hey-ho
all sorted and got some great stuff for lunch and dinner and even managed some cool bogoffs
    thanks again
