I'm off now to change my e mail address to; miserablemiddleagedbatleaxe@fedup.com
That is a great email address, sums me up to a T!Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Why would a 'quirky' email address make you stand out? Someone might spot it and laugh, but they're looking at your experience and whether you can do the job - they don't trawl through all the email addresses and pick the quirky ones.
What a bizarre way to think.
As long as your email address isn't inappropriate, it's fine - although I'd always play safe and have a firstname.surname approach.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -

Why do you need to 'trawl through HUNDREDS of email addresses'?
because I have hundreds of e mail addresses in my contacts file - on average I may receive 50-100 e mails a day from people requesting information ( and also spam) so all those that are legitimate requests get a reply and their address is added to my contacts list
I don't have time to set them all up with their own name and e mail addresses ( I am a volunteer ) in the outlook programme
for all those techy people out there, there is probably a simple way to do it- but my computer skills are self taught and not brilliant.
it's fine if they e mail and ask for information - I can just hit reply- but if they send a social media request...... then it can be very frustrating - if you can tell me a quick fix then great........but our charity has 2500 members who ALL think I know all their details off by heart !0 -
An email address is pretty irrelevant. It is not going to get you a job and is functional in that it is just a contact mechanism. No one is going to be judged on a boring email address.
However whilst an email address wont get you a job it can discount you from a job with stupid address like xxxprincessjane69xxx@ .0 -

That's the whole point. There are ways to stand out in a good way and ways to do it in a bad way. No email address is going to guarantee you an interview but a silly one could easily get you discounted spending on how they do the screening.
I'm often given a pile of about 100 CVs and have to shortlist about 5-10 for interview. I don't have a lot of time to do it so I don't really care what GCSEs you got 20 years ago but anything which piques my interest is good and anything which irritates is bad.0 -
Thanks so much for all the replies and some really valid points have been made.
There is no 666 or 69, rude or lewd words in my email but the consensus is it's a bad idea anyway.
I expect when I am job hunting i'll open another email for firstname lastname and go that route.
I am surprised though that I wasn't advised to do so by NCS when my CV was re-written.
Cheers all0 -
If someone rejected my application because it had a hotmail address (mine is over ten years old now) I'd consider myself very fortunate to have dodged a bullet.....
My main email is almost twenty years old now - I still use my old Demon account.....0 -
We used to bin any with xxx in them. We once got a CV from someone who left school in the 70s with xxx.s3xxy.bunny.69.xxx@..... person was unsuccessful and tried to claim age discrimination!0

I use two initials separated, i.e. x.x.surname@ and have a second one now which is firstname.lastname.
A previous managed of mine once immediately threw out a CV with the email address 'ultimatedragonslayer' or something like that without even reading the content.
My OH changed hers to the same format as mine (x.x.surname@) because her old one wasn't professional (in my opinion).
Put it this way, if I wanted to get anywhere at the stage I'm at, I need to appear as professional as possible at the first point someone might look over my details or CV.Professional Data Monkey

It is quite hard to get a new email address now which is just your first and last name followed by Hotmail, gmail etc. I've had a Hotmail email account for years in that format. However, when I opened an email account with gmail just for job hunting I had to put an initial between my first and last names.3 stone down, 3 more to go0
