Car Registration Northern Ireland/Scotland

OK, I'm currently in Scotland finishing a course at College, I should be finished shortly after christmas and I will then return back to N.Ireland.

I just bought a new car however as I have no fixed/permanent address in Scotland I registered it to my home back in N.Ireland. I have insured the car to an address in Scotland in the mean time however I will change this address once I return home.

I was just wondering what I should do with regards the registering on my car? I bought it from a dealer and have yet to receive my new v5 (i think thats what it is called) form declaring my ownership etc of the car.
With the difference between the DVLA and DVLNI I was just wondering what I should do with the car registration as the DVLA say i'm unable to registered it with them if I keep my N.I. address. The current registration is a Scottish address. With this cost me to change to a new N.I number plate (3 letters 4 numbers etc)

In short register the car with the folks in DVLNI using your NI address

    Hi Thompo

This would I'd do. If you are returning to NI shortly after Christmas I would get the car registered with DVLNI as it will save lots of hassle getting your road tax in the future.

If you have folks at home get them to register the car in your name using your home (NI) address.

If you register with DVLA you'll not be able to buy your tax disk from a Post Office in Northern Ireland in the future (unless you then start the process again and register the car on the DVLANI database).

You can either choose to register your car with the British registration number or have a Northern Ireland registration number issued. Personally I'd have the NI one, but that's up to you.

See pages 9 & bold writing on page 11 of
    http://www.dvlni.gov.uk/vehicles/vehicle_forms/v100.pdf
    for further info

Just inform the insurance provider when you move back to NI that you've changed address (or earlier if you change the number plate).

    Hope that helps

You won't have to change your number plate, the only difference is who keeps the registration details of your car. If the car is registered in Scotland then Swansea will hold the details, when you move back to NI, inform DVLNI and they'll send you out a new V5.

Although I'm looking forward to the day the United Kingdom is no more, England at present does not have its own vehicle licensing agency. Anyway, the OP is in Scotland at the moment. Sorry to be pedantic but using "British" and "English" interchangeably is completely wrong and contributes to the world thinking that Britain is what is encompassed by the M25.

Also, OP, you'll have to check if your insurer covers vehicles registered in NI. The situation does seem to be getting better though, I got a very good quote for insurance in NI from Endsleigh recently (in fact if you're a student you might be with them anyway).
