Cleaning Leather/Suede Shoes

Hi all,

Im looking for some advice as im a little confused.

So I have some shoes that have had a sugary drink spilled on them and they have dried off with a lot of discolouring on them.

I have checked the material and it says leather upper but rather than the leather I know they are a almost like a suede material. I think this may be nubuck but im not sure. Does this sound right?

Just wondering what you would do to clean them in my ignorance of what material it is. I'm hesitant to buy a suede or leather cleaner in-case its wrong and makes them worse. Money isn't too much of an issue seeing as though they were quite expensive. Although i'd rather not have buy a new pair! Haha

Any tips?

My Dad used to hold them over a steaming kettle, using a brush with small soft metal bristles - he said it was purely for cleaning suede shoes, but no idea if you can still get one? He never used any cleaning chemicals and any shoes he cleaned were pristine.
