Pre holiday routines

I'm off on holiday for a fortnight on Saturday. I want to come home to a clean house! What are your top pre holiday cleaning tips??

Nothing beats a clean bed to return to.

I force myself to unpack within 24hours of my return.

I put all dirty clothes in a draw string bag whilst away. Washing goes on as I unpack rest of case.

I try to make sure that there is an easy meal in the freezer to buy time before I need to do a food shop. Normally grab bread and milk at services on the way home

Empty fridge of perishables which would go off, eg milk, salad. and clean.
Empty bins last thing.
Clean sinks and loos

I normally do a full house clean, all laundry and try to clear the fridge and use up what I have in ... remember to throw away bread, milk, and anything else that might be a bit smelly

I always use it as an excuse to do a big clean (inside cuboards and other places) and make sure there are fresh bedding and towels on hand for return.

this year however we have the builders in doing the extension whist we are away so goodness knows what I will come back to .. we are on holiday next Friday for a week then the middle 2 weeks of September and the builders started last week !! yep im crazy !!

Stuff it all, I won't be there to look at it for however long I am gone for. Holidays are for fun, blow all the boring stuff.

We usually have pet sitters so I make sure the house is clean and tidy before we leave. If holidaying somewhere with a washing machine I wash clothes while away so there is less laundry to do when I get back.

No tips really as we just do our normal cleaning routine and make sure that the fridge and fruit bowl are emptied.

DH does a run to the recycling centre the day before we leave so there is no rubbish or recyclables tempting the local cats.


My neighbour puts out the food waste bin on collection day, then hides it in the shrubs in our front garden until we return.

Thanks all, I have Friday off so plan to do a big clean. Hoping to have an empty fridge so I can switch it off. Need to take quilts to the laundrette too.

Apart from changing the bed linen and sorting out the rubbish bins I don't do much. Dust will accumulate when the house is empty so I don't see any point!

Just a normal cleaning routine is fine for me.

I used to break myself trying to get everything done. Now, freeze anything that's going to go off and empty bins.
Ideally - clean sheets / floors/loos/empty laundry basket so I'm coming home to a clean sheet....but I don't stress, I start better if I'm relaxed and don't sweat the small stuff!

There's no point in dusting, there'll be a whole holiday's worth of dust settling while you're away.:o
