Can't Close Tabs In iPad Retina

I have an Apple iPad mini retina onto which I've loaded the Chrome browser
A pop up message of the type 'you may have won....' has appeared twice now in a new tab but it won't let me close it down, go back to other open tabs, or open a new one. The tab In question shows the spinning circle.
Is this some kind of malware? I've tried shutting the iPad down completely but no luck. Last time around I just opened the tab and then closed it immediately but if this is some sort of maleware I don't want to have to do that again.
If I go for the nuclear option and wipe Chrome what's the best way to do so? If it is going to do this regularly then that's what I'll probably do
I appreciate any help offered

I got that issue with Safari... tab with a message that wouldn't close. I solved the problem by wiping Safari history etc. It's very annoying.
I suppose deleting the app and reinstalling would do the trick too.0 -
Seemed to have solved the problem, why I don't know! I held down the shut down button until the slider appeared but instead of closing it Dow I pressed the Home Key and that seemed to shut down all tabs in both Chrome and Safari. Wonder why?0
