Taking on extra responsibility at work, unpaid?

Hi,
I'm after a little unbiased opinion on my job role. I've worked where I am for 5 years. Over the last couple of years I've taken on a lot more responsibilities but they've kind of crept in where I haven't really noticed, until I look back and see what my job was like a couple of years ago.
I've spoken to my boss about this and he needs me to do the jobs, and as a restructure was coming up at work, a few promotion opportunities came up. They weren't full on new jobs, just like a step up open to existing staff. One of these was perfect for me, pretty much the job I've stepped up to doing, but being recognised and paid for it. I applied, but for reasons I don't know, they didn't interview and didn't appoint.
Now I'm carrying on with my job, do you think it's fair of me to say no to these extra responsibilities which were advertised as a promotion? By offering them as a promotion is surely them admitting that the jobs are above my pay scale, so if they're not wiling to pay me for them, then I'm entitled to say no?

They didn't interview and appoint you but have they found someone else? Have you asked for feedback?
Many people take on additional responsibilities within their current role without a pay or grade rise - I have had this as well and there is very little can be done I believe.ally.0 -
If you've been doing the extras for sometime it might be deemed part of your role now. Unless the extra responsibility is described in another role in which case you might have a case. Sometimes roles and responsiblities do evolve over time due to changes in technology etc.0

No, no one was interviewed or appointed, the job was just pulled.0 -

The extra responsibilities were described in the advertised promotion, but as it was pulled then no one got the job and I guess I'm just expected to carry on with it.0 -
It sounds to me as though they have realised that the extra tasks are already being done by you and maybe others and so its more cost effective to keep it as it is. I know a few companies that have distributed extra tasks amongst existing staff rather than take on a new person.
I think its totally reasonable to ask at your next meeting with your manager what happened re the job you applied for and can you expect to have a pay rise to cover the extra work. The worst that will happen is they say no!
Its all very well being given extra stuff, but if this extra stuff was especially meant to be another role that commanded more money, then I think its unfair and they are taking advantage.0 -
I'd ask them as above and see what they say and also it wouldn't harm for you to mention that you have taken on more and you feel that your pay hasn't increased in line with this - at the end , without talking, you can only assume and it is rarely helpful! Good luck!ally.0

Do a bit of research on what those new skills would command at other places.
No point in saying you want more without nowing what "more" should be.
Depending on how the job market looks and how the cuurent company deals with this you can adjust the chat,
Ultimately they have shown their hand they think you are soft touch.
Another angle is to slowly offload the tasks the same whey they got slowly put on you.
eg. Who covers when on holiday/sick on return become too busy to take the task back.0 -
Have a look at what you could earn, with you new skillsand experience, if you were to move jobs, then at your next appraisal (or sooner if you wish, and can request a meeting with your boss & HR) put forward your case for a pay rise - try to look at it from the business's point of view - what value you add for them, why it is worth it for them to give you a pay rise.
If they are not willing to consider it then start looking for another job.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -

How long have you been doing it for? If a while then the 'extras' may now be part of your job description.0 -
