Any suggestions?
I'm looking for 1 or maybe 2 new cookbooks but I don't know which ones are best. I'd like one with cheap but healthy meals for a family and I'd also like one for the slow cooker. I'm not a great cook so something easy to follow would probably be best!
I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a cookery book that they've found useful?

Why not take a trip to your library - take out a few books, then bu the ones that you and your family like.
In the meantime, try these Old Style threads:
Recipe collection
Slow cooker collection.

Edit - just come across this - looks like a really brill thread - Old Style Book Collection. There's reviews of lots of cookery books.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
i just go on the bbc website - on the recipe finder section you can put in the title of a recipe or up to three ingredients and it gives you the options.
ideal if you have a ready steady cook type thing going on - i often type in things that are about to go off and use the recipe finder to make something decent out of them.0 -
i got a slow cooker book from a charity shop - they had 3 in when i got mine, may be worth a look there as well?'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

Another suggestion (plenty of used copies on Amazon) is Delia Smith's Frugal Food. I got it as a paperback when I was a student, more years ago than I care to remember, and it's so dogeared and covered in food now it's pretty disgusting, but I use it at least once a week! Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.0

BBC Good Food 101 Cheap Eats. £4.99 or cheaper online at play.com/amazon.
easy recipes to follow and covers veggie/pasta/snacks/one-pots/desserts/meat/fish
i would reccommend the whole BBC 101 book's range!0 -
I know Delia may not be a 'cool/trendy' chef, but you'll never go far wrong with one of her books in your collection.0

Good housekeeping step by step Cookbook - I have had two and bought it as gifts!
It has colour pictures of each dish, as well as sections on meat vegetables cakes and biscuits. Loads of information on cooking times for meat etc.
Although not specifically meant to be frugal it has recipes using cheaper cuts of meat, pasta etc
Definitely my most used reference book, last one was found in a charity shop
for £2.

Librarys / Car Boot sales / second hand bookshops / Discount book shops
You know as a meal so many people discount curry, I made one last week and once you have the herbs/spices all I needed to buy was 2 chicken fillets, 1 onion and 1 tin of tomatoes
If you have internet access, my favourite sites are bbc.co.uk/food/recipes , also itv.com/cooks , fooddownunder (amazing) and suesrecipes
You don't need to buy books, i'd say spend £30 on a printer and print off what you like0
