Proving where I got my deposit from

I have £20,000 I wish to use as a deposit for a property. This money was entrusted to a family member by my late Father who kept it until I was old enough to spend it wisely! The problem being is I have been asked by a solicitor to prove where this money has came from, as no solicitor was involved regarding my fathers estate I don't know how I to prove this. To make this more complex, I am no longer on speaking terms with the said family member.
I fully understand why my solicitor needs proof of where this lump sum has came from, but without paperwork to back it up I'm worried it looks too suspicious.
Is the only answer to reduce the deposit sum and call it savings?
