  • Underhand maybe, but if they have tried all other ways of confirming that the details they hold are correct and these ways have failed, what are they then expected to do?

Then they need to find other (legal) ways to find out the information.

I've had to deal with DCAs who had incorrect data in the past: it's 50/50 whether they're okay and believe you or act like complete bum holes and call you a liar.

FWIW DCAs are now regulated by the FCA rather than being dealt with by the OFT.

If someone owes money to a company and a debt collection agency has been brought in to collect that money because the debtor won't pay, this may be the only way that they are able to confirm that the details they have been given are correct.

People sometimes do anything and everything possible to avoid paying their debts and if this includes ignoring legitimate letters from debt collection agencies, what else are these companies expected to do to try to collect what is owed?

Would those posters referring to this as underhand and the tactics of scum have the same opinion if money was owed to them?

I've no idea of the OP's situation of if they do owe money, but if they do, surely communicating with the debt collectors is far better than ignoring them and hoping it will just go away.

I quite agree about your assertion regarding paying debts due - especially as someone who works for a bank.

Most DCAs have access to databases in which they can check where people live and whether they are still active at that address. However that involves paying for that information. This sending fake cards stance is less than ethical and shows the DCA as a company that wants to collect the debt at minimal cost. If they are willing to do this then I bet they train their agents to lie and deceive when genuine debtors in financial distress call up to make payments. There are other methods of enforcement available to them.

    Agreed.

I'd report them to the FCA, even though they don't deal with individual complaints, it should be recorded.

    Another nail in their coffin.

I also believe at least one of their testimonials is rule breaking.

Hi. Never even been into my overdraft so it's a mystery. Been at this address for decades so can't be a previous tenant.

Sounds like it may be a fishing expedition of people with your name, to try and find the actual debtor.
