Received a letter from Debt Services Manager LTD...for debt from 2005...

So I received a letter a few weeks ago from Debt Services Managers Limited ... or whatever they're called, saying that I owe £400 to some company from 2005.

I haven't heard ANYTHING about this in the past 10 years and I don't even know what it's for.

What should I do? I am in a bit of a sticky situation. This debt isn't on my credit file, but they are chasing me for this as I received another letter today.

I am scared to contact them because I have been accepted for a mortgage and I don't want this to affect that. The house isn't ready until November, can I ignore it until after I move in?

Can they add this to my credit report?!

  • If you've not acknowledged, or paid anything to this debt, then (provided there is no CCJ), it is Statute Barred.

Also, should they try to enforce it, they will need a copy of the actual agreement you signed.

Has there ever been a default issued, in respect of this debt?

Indeed, is this in fact you debt?

    Hi Bob

Honestly, I have no idea, I was only 17 at the time. It didn't provide much information, something like Shop Direct and the date. It didn't have an address, just my name.

I've not acknowledged or paid anything for it. What should I do? I'm scared
  • if you were only 17, then you couldn't legally have signed the agreement.

Did you sign any credit agreements, at that time?

Two ways you can play this, as you were only 17 at the time of account opening, it would not be legally enforceable as you were under 18 at the time.

    Or,

You can go the statute barred route, either way, you would not be liable any longer.
