New Hard drive for my laptop.... please help!

Options
Hi I have a brand new laptop hard drive to replace my broken one.
I have a very recent back up on an externat hard drive.
What do I need to do next?

The old hard drive has a silver foil type cover over the working bits, held on by 4 screws, does this need to be put on the new drive? The laptop case has grooves for the screws that keep the drive secure.

I have:-
a set of recovery discs
a complete backup of my system befor the hard drive broke
a sata caddy
a spare laptop
a laptop without a hard drive

many thanks

depends on what type of backup you have, if it's an image backup you can restore it in one go, if not you'll probably have to boot from the recovery/re-install discs

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/restore-computer-from-system-image-backup#1TC=windows-7

if the silver type cover is a tray, move it to the new disk and insert in machine first.

    Thank you!
I thought I wanted to have a complete image of my old disc drive but decided that I would take the opportunity to have a spring clean.
I have gone with the recovery discs and will move across the bits that I want when windows has finished updating.

Did you go for an SSD?

No, not in the end. I was concerned that there was more wrong with the laptop than just the hard drive and didn't want a large amount of cash sitting in the shape of an SSD.
I went for a large-ish hard drive, 750 gb, thinking that it would do as a back up drive if my laptop was completely broken.
Luckily I 'found' £40+ of credit on one of my survey site and I converted it to Amazon vouchers. I had to add £6 to this and opted for 'slow/free' delivery..... my hard drive arrived the very next day and I have been downloading windows updates ever since!

It definately seems to have done the trick... so far so good

download the software, install it, create boot disc and backup instead.

    - I've got all of that
but I don't know how to use it!

As I keep telling myself... this is a great opportunity to cut the rubbish and only install what I really need...... 14 hours later and I'm still downloading Windows updates.... ho hum..
