Online purchase paying tax?

Hi all
I dont buy stuff online very often, but recently made a purchase from a company in Walsall. When the invoice came through, this is how it was set out.
Subtotal £8.49
Shipping & Handling £3.50
Grand Total (Excl.Tax) £10.57
GB VAT 20.00% (20%)
£1.42
Tax £1.42
Grand Total (Incl.Tax) £11.99
Why have I paid tax.. is this normal .. never had to do this before?

Its normal VAT, you pay it everyday on most items.
