train fare help

Daughter has just found out she needs to travel from East Croydon to Rye on Friday 28 August. And return Monday 31st
This particular journey never seems to have cheap fare -I know as we've relatives in Hastings and it always costs an arm and a leg to visit, even booking 12 weeks in advance.
So I missing an obvious trick to reduce her fares?
There will be two of them, need to leave mid afternoon on outward and no distinct time for return, just not too late arriving at E Croydon.
Oh and no rail cards.
Any thoughts?

Spit the ticket at Hastings using the Southern Railway site there are advance tickets for the Ceoydon Hastings Leg on that Friday for only £5

Next time you travel to Hastings as a group, Get a 'Daysave' ticket which is only £35.80 which covers up to four passengers.
