Maternity Allowance and how it's calculated

Hi,
I'm just about to apply for Maternity Allowance as I don't qualify for SMP, however I want to make sure that there are no discrepancies before I send the forms off which may hold things up or result in me getting paid less than I'm entitled to.
I'm sending off my best four months payslips however my test period starts in the middle of a month so I'm assuming they will only take into account 2 weeks pay in that month. What I'm wondering is does anyone know how they average 13 weeks pay from payslips that will cover at least 16 weeks? Is it just a simple case of adding them all together and dividing it between i.e. 16 weeks then multiplying by 13 weeks to get an average??
When I've spoken to the call centre they are very vague and cannot give me a definite answer as to how it is calculated. If anyone has had experience of this any knowledge would be appreciated. x
