It's not much help now but that 6 year old debt might well have been statute barred :(

The debt has stayed still for 3 years. I was unemployed / on maternity for 2 out of the last 5 years. My husband has brought debt with hi from before our marriage, but reduced this by £10k. Then the kids arrived. He has £20k of debt. I have £8k.

This then is the source of your problems obtaining a mortgage. Not moving around a lot. As others have said it's this you need to get to grips with. From an outsiders point of view ( i.e. a lenders) the concern will be that you don't manage your personal finances well. Would take very little to tip you over the edge and down a slippery slope.

Thanks everyone. Amazing how easy it is to find excuses and bury your head in the sand.

Off to the debt free board.

Depends on what you define as being "Successful". Personally , I want
To live a long healthy life ,appreciate the people around me and have £1.00 more than I need.. That's "need" not want .

Maybe the OP was being moved to various "safe houses" by MI5 ?. Now, tired of running they want to buy and disappear into the community of a small rural Cumbrian village .The OP becoming a TA at the local Primary school.. :D

Omg leveller how did you know ? Somebody leaked my file !

Moved out of London to a small island into rental, then bought a house and had a baby. Husband hated small island so we moved back to UK into rental, was awful place, moved into another rental. Then "bought" house with parental help. 40 % deposit. Now I know that we should have spent deposit paying off debts. I am finally enlightened.
