Highly inefficient in total energy terms but if your source energy is 'free' then could be the answer to the feast/famine issue of renewables

Some would say heating thousands of square miles of desert is more inefficient.

No need for that if cat and toast are in a sphere, surely? Both are trying to make contact with a surface, thereby stopping the other from making contact.

No. You can't get energy from anywhere for nothing, all you ever do is convert energy from one form to another. If you extract some energy from the tides to generate electricity it just means that it's heating your home instead of the sea.

If you could find some way to prevent losing energy to the tides (by freezing the sea solid?) the earth won't speed up, it will just slow down more slowly. You'd have to put energy into the system to speed up the rotation of the earth.
