Bit confused -- tax code?

Hey,

My tax code has always been 950L

I had a rebate this year AGAIN of £100 and it has a note to say I haven't benefited from this years tax rate.

I don't understand why I am on this code? all my colleagues who are even on more than me are on 1000L/1060L ?

My income last year was £20,223

I don't have uniform, car, any pension or insurances as to why my tax code is still 950L.

Anyone know why?

I was on hold yesterday and today to HMRC for 25 minutes and got fed up of waiting.

Why have I not benefited?

Ring HMRC to ask them what code you should be on and ask if it can be issued to your employer.

I rang HMRC on behalf of my wife at 7.45 this morning - answered instantly (after listening to the drivel and security questions).
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.

A rebate of £100 is equivalent to tax on £500 or a code number of 50 less than usual ie for last year 950L rather than 1000L . Just checking there is nothimg after the L such as an X or M1?
It sounds as if HMRC may think you have other untaxed income of about £500, did you ever have another job?
To make progress you will have to contact HMRC by phone, do this either at 8:00 am or after 7:00 pm when they are not busy.
The only thing that is constant is change.

For how long has your tax code been 950L?
Do you get any tax allowances for washing your own uniform?

Hey thanks for all your replies -- on my P60 it says 950LM1

I did get a rebate of £100 this year.

I finally got through to tax office after 45 minutes waiting - he advised the company hadn't updated it and no reason for it to be 950 and changed to 1060L and notified my company.

I worked at Sainsburys before this job (part time evenings due to having my child) -- 2 years ago which yes I did have a uniform but do not have one now and nothing else except my wage.

I wish I got more as I do work from home and use my electricity sometimes ;( I got one of them British gas meter things they're rolling out so you can see how much you spend -- I do a 15hr shift on mostly Sundays and it costs £19.20 every Sunday on that meter for just my PC in electricity! ;(

I do 40 hours a week and on £21000, I am a software engineer so have to use PC!

£19.20 for 15 hours is about £1.28 per hour
electricity is about 15p per kilowatt hour
so you are using about 8.5 kilowatts
the average PC might use 0.1 or 0.2 kilowatts
which would cost about £0.34 per 15 hour shift

    there's something definitely wrong here.

The tax code of 950L would be correct for your old job with a uniform washing addition. It appears that your new employer has not been updating your tax code as they are supposed to. Do you know if anyone else working there has that problem?
Hopefully your employer will update on the HMRC instruction but it would be as well to check on it and also check if it gets updated next tax year.

Also no idea why they had you on Month 1 code, even assuming it was month 1 on the P45 they should have converted that to cumulative when the next tax year started.

Are you certain of this? If so, are you sure that your meter has been connected correctly? You aren't paying for somebody else's usage?

    Have it checked!
