Am I being silly?

Hi again, sorry if I am being silly as I think the answer is that this is rubbish but I feel rather paranoid right now so I want to ask anyway ...

A friend told me that if you go BR then the OR makes you close your SKY TV account and BT broadband regardless. (I am not puttting them down as expenses on my BR form but I do want to keep them)

Also I am told the electricity company will be told of my BR by OR and will make us use a pre-payment meter - that would be disasterous for us as the nearest point to charge it is in town 5 miles away and we dont drive. Also it costs far more. I have moved all the DD pmts to wifes bank account and we are not in debt to electric or water etc - do I have to worry though? Should I try and chage the names on the electric, sky, & BT account to wifes?

I KNOW I am being a fool but please reassure me - thanks

As long as you are not in arrears with SKY, BT or any utilities then I haven't heard of anyone having major problems. If anyone has I'm sure they will reply and let you know. If you feel more comfortable changing the names over that is up to you as an extra precaution.

If you owe any of them loads and want it to be written off with the bankruptcy, then the OR would have to inform them and it all becomes a different matter.

Any surplus money that you have after any potential IPA/O (if you get one) is yours to do with as you please. If that goes on broadband and SKY, that is your choice.

  • Re Sky & your broadband - the OR can't make you close the accounts. However, they won't allow money in your living expenses to cover the cost of them unless you can give very good reasons why you should be able to keep them. So if you don't include them in your SOA, you'll have to be prepared to find the money from whatever living expenses you're left with to cover the cost of them. If you can, try to reduce the packages that you're on so that you've got more chance of being able to maintain the payments further down the line - if you're still under the contract period with either of them (is it still 12 months?), they can make you pay for the remainder of the contract even if you say you don't want them any more, so it's better to reduce the cost as much as possible if you can.

If you owe the electricity supplier any money, they'll have to be put on your SOA as one of your creditors and then the OR will inform them of your BR status. The OR can't tell them what to do about future billing, but the company may decide that a pre-payment meter is the best way to ensure they get their money in future. If you don't owe them any money, you should be able to keep them on your current set-up, as you won't need to put them on your SOA. There's no point changing the account names - if they're not going on your SOA, it won't matter what name is on the account because the OR won't be involved in it.

Hope that helps. You're not being a fool - I dreamed of the most ridiculous things before going BR, far more ridiculous than anything you're said, & I bet I'm not the only one. :)
  • Hi gratton20, no your not being silly, i have thought all your questions and MANY more besides, seems to be the more you think about BR, the more questions you need answering, the more scary it becomes!
Do as much reading up on it as you can, and read the posts here, I read LOADS of posts here before I actually joined up to MSE but I STILL keep thinking of more things to ask.........:)

Thanks for the reassurance. I have got so much on my mind but its a great help to have support from this board. I have booked my BR hearing for Mon 3rd September at 2pm ... and you know what I already feel better LOL

I will soon have some questions about my "expenses" and "why did you get into debt" I am sure LOL
  • Good thats the first step done then :)
Keep asking those questions when you think of em too. Some people post their SOA on here too, if your comfortable with doing that then Im sure someone would be willing to give it the once over
