Self Assessment - dates?

Options
Pardon my ignorance but my daughter was self-employed for a short time. She finished in January of this year and has just, this morning, paid a 6-month tax bill, due the end of this week - 31st July. I'm struggling to find the dates that this payment covers as her ex-accountant's invoice doesn't specify so I'm asking you lovely people. Are the 6-monthly self-assessment periods "real time" or do they tie-in with the official tax quarters of the year? Trying to work out whether the tax she has just paid is a guesstimate covering Sept 14 to April 5th for the end of the financial year or whether it does actually cover Jan 1st to July 31st 15? Or does it go back even further? Could someone enlighten me please? Basically, we are just wondering whether she might get a tax rebate in the fullness of time....

Thank you in advance.

The payment due on 31st July is a second payment on account for tax payable 2014/15 TAX YEAR.

The tax due FOR 2014/15 TAX YEAR is payable as follows:

First payment on account due 31st January 2015 (based on half of 2013/14)

Second payment on account due 31st July 2015 (based on half of 2013/14)

    Any balance payable - 31st January 2016.

The rules are you have to account to HMRC annually. For 14/15 It is the annual accounts which ended anytime in the year 6/4/14 - 5/4/15.
The only thing that is constant is change.
