Surely the alternative to claiming a repayment is getting it back through your tax code? Which some might prefer, I guess.

    Or am I missing something?

The option is not available if one is not in employment. I queried the inclusion of this question with HMRC when Self-assessment was being designed. HMRC took the view that some taxpayers would be happier to keep the repayment as a credit in their account for future liabilities as opposed to claiming it back and paying the next bill as and when it was due.

However many see the question as 'Do you want to claim your repayment or let HMRC keep it?'

Still a daft question in my eyes!
