I've asked about this a few times in different opticians (I like large frames, and they're becoming harder and harder to find).

I was told there would be a non-refundable charge (normally around £20) for fitting ito old frames, and if the frames broke while they were doing it (the older they are the more likely they are to break) they couldn't be held liable - and I'd not only have to purchase new frames but also another set of lenses to fit the new frames on top of having paid the charge for them to try doing it

Needless to say I've not reused old frames.

That's ridiculous. When I got mine reglazes in Specsavers no one tried to use scare tactics like that to get me to buy new ones. They were fine just replacing my lenses. I had a spare set as well, but I don't need to wear glasses all the time, just for driving/movies/long distance.

I had a particularly nice frame a couple of years ago and have never been able to find one I like as much.

Last year, when I had my eye test and new prescription, I just couldn't find anything as good. However, Specsavers said a reglaze would not be guaranteed. I ended up with boring ones.

I had an old pair reglazed by Vision Express. Pretty expensive, I could have bought new cheaper.

As Specsavers are a franchise, the way customers are treated will vary from branch to branch.

I had several pairs re-glazed at Selectspecs. They did a good job and were very reasonable too. I actually got the glasses originally from Boots, but they quoted me an absurd price to do them.

No they are not - Head office own the controlling share in all stores - they should operate similar levels of customer service and specs can be taken back to any store.

I cant recommend Ciliary Blue highly enough, great value and quality lenses, you just need an up to date prescription and the frames :)

I have some v expensive Italian frames and a local optician reglazed for £60. I also bought a very cheap pair for around the house. They are great. I will be doing the same in 2 years!
  • I also use a local independent optician (and went to his uncle before him, so it's a total of over 40 years...!) Since my eyesight is really very bad, and is still changing, I usually have the last-but-one pair of specs reglazed, plus getting a new pair, so that I always have 2 on the current prescription plus one on the previous in case of emergency.

I've never ever had any problems with the reglazing, no broken frames or anything like that. I've also brought in a pair of Gucci sunglass frames I bought in the T K Maxx discount section for £8 and they put sunglass lenses in them - after checking the fit as it's essential for my eye condition that the centre of the lens is in the right place. They even supplied me with a Gucci case for them for free!
