No disrespect, but you have 3 kids. Without stating the blooming obvious they are the reason you are going to struggle to buy in Torquay on a mediocre wage.

I'd love to have more than the one child I currently have (I'm 27), but I put my career first and I have only just got on the housing ladder with a combined income more than double what you are your partner earn just across the border in Somerset.

A degree doesn't entitle you to a decent wage, I have many friends who didn't get degrees who earn much more than you both combined, they don't love their jobs as much, but clearly you have a choice to make. Job satisfaction or financial satisfaction?

    This.

Unfortunately OP it seems you swallowed the crap that politicians tell you that you can easily have a family and career. The reality is unless you build a career first in an area that pays a decent salary you will always struggle. Why have 3 kids at your age? Sorry but you are owed nothing, degree or not. Many people have to work for years in their chosen area before they can consider having one child.

The harsh reality is that all the while you are saving property prices will be going up. Tbh if your husband is on zero hours then he needs a proper full time job even if it is working somewhere like macdonalds it would look better to a lender than what he is doing now.

Also, unless you graduated from one of the top universities like Oxford or Cambridge, gone are the days when a degree in any old subject is worth something, there are so many graduates with rubbish degrees like philosophy that employers actually look at the subject you studied for relevance now.
