Where I come (Systems Support) a P1 is an all-other-calls-all-other-matters-can-take-a-back-seat-something-essential-has-just-gone-offline-and-there's-no-telling-what-the-problem-is-or-when-it's-going-to-be-sorted.
Part of the problem for first line support is that as well as trying to relay messages to managers and staff, you've got to try and co-ordinate the maintenance response as you are the contact for the engineers and you are deluged with calls from users who are 'helpfully' telling what you already know.
A large number of the calls ends with "Yes, we are aware, our engineers are working on it and we will send out an email as soon as we have any news."
It's extremely stressful even if you are dealing with one site. Someone dealing with a system that's used nationally will be bombarded. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
well i have my disciplinary on friday afternoon...
the letter which was emailed to me states:
The purpose of the meeting is to consider the following allegation of gross misconduct against you:-
• you displayed inappropriate and aggressive conduct towards colleagues resulting in a loss of confidence in your integrity
The basis for the allegation is witness statements and investigation meeting notes.
Please find enclosed copies of all relevant documents for your consideration prior to the hearing.
The hearing will be held in accordance with the Disciplinary Policy. If you are found guilty of gross misconduct, you may be dismissed without notice or pay in lieu of notice.
so it looks like i'm going to be losing my job
they dont mention anything but gross misconduct is there no way i could get less? otherwise i may as well hand in my notice? 0 -
Just my opinion -
In the disciplinary, I would hold my hands up, apologise profusely and agree with the allegation, but inform them of the mitigating circumstances (ie just back from sick leave, depression, high volume of calls, short staffed and apparent lack of support from management) and hope they have some leniency towards you. They may still find that it was gross misconduct, but might only give you a written warning. This of course would depend on your service record up until now and any prior issues.
Some companies do give a bit of leeway with their disciplinary procedures and not all will go down the dismissal route. At least the company seems to be following a set procedure and keeping you informed of possible outcome.
The cynical side of me says that the company might see this as an opportunity to get rid of you, given your depression and previous sick leave.
In terms of handing in your notice, I have seen companies give references which state that the employee resigned while a disciplinary investigation was ongoing. As long as it is factually correct then they can do this. If this was the case then resigning wouldn't be much more beneficial than being dismissed.Mortgage = [STRIKE]£113,495 (May 2009)[/STRIKE] £67462.74 Jun 20190 -

Sometimes the people who care the most are the most likely to not tolerate bad management or slacking from colleagues. You went about it in the wrong way but I can totally appreciate your frustration. I would definitely be as honest as possible and stress the outburst came from your passion for the job being done correctly.0

You say in your OP "the team on shift and i were struggling with the amount of calls" and that regarding lack of support "there never has been and the whole desk feel the same".
May I ask where were this "team" when you took the actions you did? e.g. did they all walk in behind you?
And what, if anything, have the "team" done to support you whilst you are suspended?0 -
I think all that V0ucher can really do is to apologise sincerely for what happened, explain what led up to the outburst and pledge to learn from the experience.
I do agree that further advice from the GP would help though; as a depression sufferer myself I know how profoundly it can affect an ability to cope or respond rationally.
No-one can change what has happened - only how it is viewed subsequently. I hope that there will be a bright and positive outcome for the OP; with or without the current job.
Let us know how you get on, V0ucher. All the best. x0 -
Do you have an excellent work record prior to this incident?
I knew an employee at my place that shouted at another colleague (he was well known for having tantrums) and got disciplined for it.
I don't know the exact in and outs, but they kept him. I suspect because despite his tantrums he does bring a lot of business to the company and he apologies (he always does after his trantrums) and he had to attend an anger management class.
He was also advised that it was final warning.
He still has the occasional minor tantrum, but has never verbally abused anybody.0
