old debt worries

I have done a credit check and it says that since 2008 I have been debt free, it has traced that I use my maiden name and one previous married name that goes back to 2008. However I was married before this and I know my ex left me with a load of debt in 2002, I have never responded to any of the letters since, and I have had maybe one or two still trying to chase me all these years later even after moving. will these debts still be live. I was surprised the credit report didn't pick up on the previous married name.
My partner wants to put my name on his house deeds as we are doing a Will, but is now unsure as I had these debts years ago, will they try and make him sell his house if my name is on the deeds?

    Hi,
Any debts from that long ago will now be statute barred, they only appear on your credit file for 6 years, after that they are gone.
If anyone writes to you regarding them, you simply write back telling them they are SB.

That should be the end of the matter, you can't be taken to court for a statute barred debt, once you have advised the collector of its SB status, so any talk of charging orders and courts no longer applies.

In England and Wales, the debt does not disappear, but they can't obtain judgment against you, if in Scotland, the debt is extinguished after 5 years, and no longer exists.
