  • Thanks for all your replies folks. I'm not sure if the letters were opened originally but yes, they are addressed to a relative so it may be that they were asked to check the contents.

I think I'll tell them to go for the postbox approach, possibly combined with a letter to any companies that call.

    Thanks again

Wouldn't return opened letters .... it begs more questions.

As it is a relative, one approach would be to give the letters to the relative and say that if the tsunami of debt letters is not stopped, the agencies will be given the relative's current address.

    Not really.

I've accidentally opened the occasional letter addressed to previous tenants. It's easily done, when it's mixed in with a handful of your own mail.

I just tape it shut, write "OPENED IN ERROR. NOT AT THIS ADDRESS" on it, and bung it in the nearest pillar box.

If this is making the recipient anxious, please reassure them that debts follow an individual not a property. I know some older people worry terribly about this sort of thing.

The majority of problems we see on here with mail from debt collectors is when people open it and act on the contents.
Then they quite often end up even more harassment.

If its not your name, bin it.
