Not sure if this is where to post this, if it would be better suited elsewhere could it please be moved?
I want to treat myself to a decent gold chain, up to about £1000, partly as an investment (to pass down to the kids as an heirloom) and partly for me to enjoy now prices have dropped. As i am not particularly bothered about design am i going to get better value buying new or 2nd hand. Or as we are going to Turkey in October and the exchange rate is so good at the moment am i better waiting until we go there, we went earlier this year and bought some silver which seemed exceptional value.
TIA

If you've been to Turkey before and know a good jeweller you should be fine. The cheapest cold is 14K and their 18 or 22K is nice too. If you want something as an "investment" piece then I'd suggest plain gold as the return value on any stones seems to be exceptionally low. If you do buy in Turkey then get a decent jeweller who will give you a registration certificate which you can take, with the item, to the local office and have verified as genuine. Obviously there are cheats everywhere but if you take sensible precautions and take the time to get to know the seller that's better. I've been going to Icmeler in Turkey on and off for many years and always go to the same jeweller as he has been there, in the same shop, for more than 20 years.
Other than that I'd go secondhand as the UK markup on new gold jewellery is horrific!Looking ahead0 -
Thanks for the replies. Was going to buy on CC as its a 2.9% charge but comes with protection. Could you pass me details of your jeweller as we are going to Marmaris for 2 weeks and intending walking down to Icmeler a couple of days. Failing that we found a great silver jeweller who may be able to recommend or purchase on iur behalf. Will try to find the local office but was planning on having it revalued on my return to Norwich for insurance purposes.0

There is a lot of good jewellery in our local auction house. I've got one or two very nice pieces there.0

Go and see Joseph at Pasha & Co.
We got a wedding band made to match an engagement ring, and a set of nice diamond earrings. Joseph advised they would be around 50-60% cheaper than if we bought them back home. When we got home we took them to a local jewelers who values them at over 3 times what we had paid for them!!
Nothing is a problem for Joseph and his team. When designing the ring for us we were told if we didn't like it when we went to view it they would just add it too their stock with no obligation to buy, or charge to us. They even arranged to get in touch with us when the ring was ready (they said within 3 days, it was ready in 2) to come to our hotel and let us see the ring they had made. They brought a chip & pin machine and we paid there & then in the comfort of our room. Turns out the hotel we were staying in was owned by his father in law, and was where he got married. Grand Passa Hotel, highly recommend it if you have yet to book!
Look up Pasha Gold Marmaris on trip advisor and you'll see for yourself just how good they are! We will be paying them a visit again next time we are in Marmaris. Top quality and very good prices.0
