Definitely look into a 2nd hard car and funding via 0% cards etc, very much depends on the car value and the term but should work out. Also remember a lot of companies factor into the price you pay the 0% finance.

Doing the opposite of saving money today - buying furniture for when we move. We've been renting a furnished flat so we hardly have anything. But we've been shopping the sales and have gotten some pretty good deals - the sofa and dining room table we ordered a few weeks ago have jumped back up to full price, which is over double what we paid. And it's decent, sturdy furniture which should last us at least 10 years.

Also, we stuck it all on a credit card which has 21 months at 0%, so we can just put aside a little each month ready to pay it off in full when the time comes.

We moved in a couple of days ago, so it's been a fairly expensive week - dinners/takeaways to thank the family who helped us move, the inevitable massive grocery shop after spending months running down the contents of our cupboards, and so on. But having our own house is amazing :D

Also, we got an incredible surprise when we moved in - there was a thank you card containing a cheque for £1000 from my husband's former boss! So that's given us a nice buffer on what would have been a very tight couple of months.

    Hi
Congrats on new place and welcome!
In terms of the new car - I got a PCP on mine which was 2 years old. Speak to a dealer and get them to do you some quotes. (If you are always going to trade it / keep it long term / happy to sell privately, tell them you only do 5,000 miles a year - it keeps the costs down! Don't do this if you are planning on giving it back!)

  • Congrats on the new home and wishing a great MF journey. As someone who was in a similar car buying situation and bought a new car, i really wish i had the advise people have been giving you here. 12-118 months old still gives you the warranty etc without depreciation. xx

Had a good look at the finances today. Between the gift from husband's former boss, the swift return of our entire deposit from our rented flat, and generally being careful with money because we expected things to be tight after the move, we've managed to save up £3k of our £6k buffer :D

Finally paid off the last remaining bills from the old flat - our former council only just sent us a final statement - so that's all square.

And we've already moved energy suppliers too, saving around 25% on prices from the supplier that came with the house. I'm also really amazed at how cheap gas is compared to electricity - I've never paid bills in a property with gas before. Can't complain at £7 a month to run the heating!

Only slightly disappointing thing is how little the mortgage reduces at first! £1700 in payments and only £400 lower than when we took it out :( Bah.
