How does the process of accepting a job offer work?

Sorry but it's been a long time since I've done this!

While I don't know 100% obviously, there is a very good chance I am going to get a job offer tomorrow. But what I need to know is, what is the correct etiquette for accepting it? do you verbally say yes and then wait for the contract to come through before making it official?

Or do you say you want to see the employment contract before accepting?

And at what point would I hand my notice in at my current job? I'm guessing most people don't do that on a verbal job offer alone, but rather wait until the paperwork contract comes?

Sorry but I find it so confusing so any help would be so gratefully appreciated!

  • I feel as though I want to see the employment contract and the salary etc on paper before I commit? but how do I say this on the phone without sounding rude?

I've always accepted verbally and asked for the paperwork to be sent to me asap. If they don't honour the salary etc that you've been offered then you simply withdraw your acceptance on that basis.
  • Ok thank you. Would you only hand your notice in when you've seen the paperwork and everything is ok?

Yes, do not hand in notice until you have a job offer

Just to add... Accept the job offer in writing and confirm the receipt of this by the new employer. before u hand in your notice.
