That's wrong, unless the OP requests the amount to be ring fenced in advance then benefit income has no special status. The law on this subject is often misunderstood.

According to the bank manager they can't withhold the benefits, but they still need authorisation from above before they can release it.

And yes my son gets free medications, but I don't take him to the doctors for minor sore throats, or little coughs. It's a waste of their time, so I buy off the shelf children's medicine which does the trick. He needed it for school today, but thankfully he seems to be well.

No school in the Uk would allow you to leave non prescription medicine for a child. It is against the policy.

He needed it for school, meaning he needed to have it before he went in to ensure his ailments are alleviated. He also uses it at home. Honestly, what's the purpose of this interrogation?
  • Please delete's post is also incorrect.

Good luck OP - let us know how you get on.

I was told both were card transactions. How is that possible when the savings account has a basic card, it's not even a visa. They also said both were "forced". I have no idea what that means.
    ??

A “Forced Sale” is a transaction initiated by a merchant with the intent of forcing the posting of the transaction against the customer account without receiving prior authorization by the card issuer, or receiving a voice authorization code from the merchant acquiring call center. An example would be when a merchant’s terminal is offline, requiring the purchase of goods being completed without receiving online authorization by the card issuer. Or they received a Voice Approval. In these cases the merchant would enter the transaction details and forward this Forced Sale transaction to the card issuer with the expectation of receiving funding for the goods or services rendered. A forced sale does not require a matching authorization. Forced Sales are also known as Off-Line Sales.

  • Yes, technically you're right and we made all the official complaints. But we couldn't wait for weeks as the money from the household account ran out quickly, as we had to use that for day to day business expenses. After 11 days of no action from Barclays, the answer for us was to call the newspapers.

One phone call from a Journalist and the money was back in the account within two hours......

You do know thats not how basic P&L accountancy works?

The balance sheet of the customer accounts is no separate from that of the banks own internal accounts, the banks "position" and the P&L that comes off that is calculated on the entire banks holding in each currency.
I know it is not how it should work. But I don't see that it cannot happen - particularly with a breach of procedure. This from sourcrates makes me think that someone somewhere is doing something underhand.

The fact that 2 of the OP's accounts are affected to the extent of £100k makes me think that this is entirely internal to the bank.
  • Not definitely but probably. Funny after nearly two weeks of badgering them (including from my MP), the money goes in just under two hours after the press call them. Obviously, the absolute worst thing for any business is bad publicity.
