How to get hired for a short term admin role?

Any tips? I've been trying for 4 weeks and nothing has come up. All I seem to be getting is agencies with unrealistic expectations of 7 or 8 years experience.

Expecting previous experience is not unrealistic. What experience do you have? Have you looked at other types of work?

No, indeed it isn't. But, 7 years for entry level admin/data entry is pushing it a bit. If they were any good- after 7 years they'd be managing an office of their own.

I have admin experience- letting agency, project management * systems implementation consultancy and planning* and legally based. Very short term appointments though.

I have considered other types of work, but it is better to have limited experience of something than no experience of a thing.

I'm 2/3 of the way through my degree at a Russell Group, have over 10 good GCSEs and 3 A-levels, as well as excellent references.

you could try your local NHS admin bank, although it would probably take weeks to jump through all the hoops to register

7-8 years' experience isn't unrealistic. Plenty of "return to work" or "took a time out" type of people about. I'll be registering soon.... 40 years' experience and I'll take anything just to get those essential references "proper jobs" will expect.

I've RSA III Typewriting and Shorthand - also taught those - I type at over 100wpm. Shorthand was 180wpm at my peak, so probably 100-120wpm now.

I taught Office Practice too. 30+ years' IT experience - everything from selling, to training, to support, helpdesk and a Prince2 Practitioner certificate with many years of IT project management work. Loads of web experience, of all sorts.

I hope to get some copy typing work - although that doesn't really exist these days does it. Filing .... anything.

I think we are at very different stages in our careers though, so respectfully, it is clear you have much more to offer a prospective employer than I do. I can only type at maybe 56wpm and I have no particular specialism to offer.

I wish you the best of luck in your search! But I think if you're going to offer 2 months of work paid at £6.50 an hour, you're a bit cheeky if you want someone as experienced as yourself. if my age is x yrs, your experience is 2x yrs :)

  • Have you contacted the careers service at your University for help constructing an appropriate CV template? There may well also be an admin pool for temps at the University.

I have, my cv serves its purpose. The problem with my Uni's admin bank is the standard of the competition. Everyone else is so good. My issue might be that i'm simply not good enough-- but I'm not into that idea.

That's how they work. Cheeky. Cheeky expectations and cheeky pay. That's how they get to be bosses and we get to stay as drones - we're not arrogant/cheeky enough to win :)
  • It is very likely that you are good enough but that you are having to play a numbers game. Sheer weight of numbers make it a lottery and that is nothing new, it was like this back in the 1980s and in the 1970s...whenever there has been a recession.
Just keep on trying, trying, trying. Make sure you tailor the CV to each and every role and employer.
