You're not comparing like for like - your examples could cause harm to an individual, the OP's situation is only affecting the profits of corporate giants.

So you don't mind stealing from a company if they make profits? Ethical situation is not different here. There is a wrongdoing and you need to decide what to do.

Have reported him to FAST and other online Piracy Reporting sites, even phoned one that didn't seem too interested as he is only a small company.

On that note I will draft a letter to all the business customers I know and see if I can find addresses for the home users that I'm aware of.

In response to the thread. I would whistle blow.

If you know a company is doing something illegal, by not reporting it, wouldn't that make you an accessory or something?

If my employer wanted to do something dodgy, there's no way I would let myself be part of it. I would advice them against it, but if a manager was breaking company policy then the manager would be prosecuted not the company. If the company kept quite to cover up for the manager then then company would be implicated.

Mustang121 the op has already started the process.

For me it would be a no-brainer. I would have let the customers know a long time ago.

Let's just hope the business is not a limited company or it will simply dissolve and reappear without action being taken.

I guess my next question is whether I do this anonymously or if I state I used to work for said company and end up potentially implicating myself as I have not acted on it sooner ?

It is a LTD company and they are soon to be made insolvent, I have heard he is billing under a different company name already (a company he created when his bank account got frozen a year or so back)

The Ltd Company will not shield the people involved from criminal prosecution. It can only shield them from being personally financially responsible. Note if they get fined as a result of any criminal prosecution they will have to pay that of course.

The antics of this firm reminded me of an IT firm in Essex a few years back (who are still trading). They landed the contract to supply and manage a Comprehensive School's portable computing solutions (laptops) and manage the school network.

What they ended-up doing was using the School's spare Windows and MS Office COAs on computers they were building for other clients.
Cost that company £10,000 in fines from Microsoft and MS also removed them from their partner program.

The School terminated the contract with immediate effect.

As for whistle-blowing, I'd do it anonymously.
